At-Home IPL Hair Removal: Smoothskin Bare Review | + GIVEAWAY

Winter transitioning to Spring generally means the rude awakening that it's leg shaving season. You haven't bothered to keep up with the hair removal since mid October and you've mutated into a Wookie. If only there was a way to avoid these things...

Oh wait! There is: IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). An easy and effective way to get rid of unwanted body hair, long term. But it's not really an option for the average woman because it's so expensive. I took a look at a top clinic in London, where the cheapest course of treatments (around 6 to stop hair growing back) came in at £408, which would rid just your upper lip of hair. If you just wanted your bikini area done, that'd run you £600. To have all your body hair removed would cost you over £3,000. Hardly accessible, really?
For the last couple of months I've been using the Smoothskin Bare* at-home IPL hair removal treatment. For starters, the device is much more cost effective at less than £200. It can be used all over the body, including your face. I personally have been using it on my legs, bikini area and under arms.  I must admit I was skeptical at first, especially after finding out the prices to get it done at a clinic. Could it really be done so much more affordably, in your own home?

I took some progress photos of my legs to see how I got on:
I used to shave my legs once a week. I took the left photo when it had been 7 days since I'd last shaved them, and in the right photo - after my fourth treatment - it had been 14 days since I'd last shaved (apologies for my unphotogenic legs!) As you can see from my before and after image, at fourteen days, there's only a hint of hair starting to peep through. Pre-IPL treatment I'd have been full Chewbacca by the two week mark! My hair is very thick so I'm surprised by this drastic improvement! I only photographed my legs because a) who wants to see an armpit...? and b) you know, vagina. But I'm equally impressed by how low maintenance both those areas are now, too. Likewise, I've found I only started to see a hint of hair after around 2 weeks. To put that into perspective, I used to shave my armpits every other day, and my bikini area once or twice a week.I used it once a week for a month as per instructions, and according to Smoothskin's statistics, there will be a 92% hair reduction after 4 weeks. I think the image above speaks for itself! The device itself is very easy to use. You literally just plug it in and you're good to go. You hold down the button on the top and as you run it across your skin it will start to flash. It flashes 100 times per minute! It flashes once every 0.6 seconds so you can cover a lot of area, very fast! I'd say I only spend between 10 and 15 minutes laser'ing myself.  The Smoothskin Bare uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL); it works to reduce hair growth as the light energy is transferred through the skin and is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft. This light energy is converted to heat energy which prevents the hair follicle from further growth. (Disclaimer: I pulled this technical information from Smoothskin's website, I personally don't actually know anything about lasers/IPL).

  9. Impressed by your photos. I was thinking about laser hair removal for a while. As you said it`s super expensive in a salon and looks a bit time consuming and boring to do with handheld devices. I mean it is a lot of skin to cover. I`m very conscious of the hair on my upper lip and chin. It`s getting worse and tweezers are not an option any more.

  20. I tried the Phillips Lumia and after 1 session there are a few patches that have never grown back (I think I did it 6-8 years ago!) and then after initial dedication to doing it I stopped apart from an occasional go because it took so long to do and to charge that realistically I'd be setting aside a whole evening for both lower legs! This seems a lot quicker and easier so I'd be much more likely to keep up with it. Having done whole legs several times over the years there are still a few bits that never grow back and others that are as hairy as ever if I let them grow so I'd love to get rid of those bits too.
